New event to spread the Spirit of Llangollen
A new event which promises to spread the spirit of the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod to other parts of Wales and beyond has been announced today.
The new "Spirit of Llangollen" events will see some of the best international competitors from the Eisteddfod perform across Wales; a new Choir of the Decade contest ‘Voices Pavarotti’, and a Music and Peace Conference with world-renowned speakers.
It will build on the success of the Choir of the World competition at Llangollen and will receive support from the Assembly Government’s major events unit for its first three years.
The "World on the Road" tour following this year’s Eisteddfod and in July 2012, will see competitor groups moving out from the festival to perform in other areas of Wales, including Llandudno and other parts of north Wales, Cardiff, Carmarthen and Brecon (as well as other parts of the UK).
The Voices Pavarotti competition will take place in October 2011 at a venue in Cardiff. This will bring back to Wales ‘Choirs of the World’ from 2001 onwards to compete for a new trophy. Other venues will be sought to support each choir, in order for each to perform at least once more during their stay.
A ‘Llangollen Music and Peace Conference’ to take place in 2012 or 2013, bringing delegates to Llangollen and the Dee Valley for a two-day conference on the role music plays in promoting peace and harmony in the world. Speakers will include former Nobel Peace Prize winners and nominees.
This year’s Choir of the World competition takes place in the Llangollen Eisteddfod evening concert on Saturday 10 July. The finalists will be drawn from the five major choral competitions of the festival week; choirs from the USA, Philippines, Iceland, Scotland, Wales, Sweden, Indonesia, South Africa, England, Poland, New Zealand and Germany will be competing in these.
