Wales at UN climate change talks

Wales’ Minister for the Environment, Jane Davidson is representing Wales at crucial UN talks in Poland to thrash out a new deal on climate change.

Thousands of delegates from 190 countries are working towards a new treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012, at the conference in the city of Poznan.

Ms Davidson is leading the Welsh delegation and meeting national and regional leaders to see what action they can take together to contribute to the battle against climate change.

Regional leaders from all over the world are there including South Australia Premier Mike Rann and President Abdoulaye Senes, President of the Fatick Region of Senegal. The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger will also address delegates via video link.

Environment, Sustainability & Housing Minister Jane Davidson told the Climate Leaders Summit that Wales can play its part: "Wales is a small country, and what we do may be minor on a global scale, but we are determined to show that a small, clever nation can be at the forefront of the drive to reduce greenhouse gasses and promote sustainable energy."

Jane Davidson is Vice-Chair for Europe of the Network of Regional Governments for Sustainable Development (nrg4SD). The group, co-founded by the Welsh First Minister Rhodri Morgan in 2002, are meeting in Poland.

The Welsh Assembly Government has set a target of reducing green house gasses in devolved areas by 3 percent from 2011.
